Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out to monitor ground reduction and new drains. During the course of excavation in and around the south frontage, evidence of the former Saxon City defences, constructed in the time of King Offa (9thc) were encountered in the form of ramparts, with a later phase (probably phase 2) of stone wall aligned east-west along the north face of the rampart. Within the building on the north frontage, stratified medieval deposits that had been cut by medieval and post-medieval features were present. The earliest pottery found on the site came from an existing drain run and dated to the 11th or 12th centuries. The uppermost fill of a ditch believed to have been cut as part of the re-fortification work carried out by Earl Harold (c1055) was encountered just within the excavated depth near the middle of the site.
