Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in May and June 2012 on land at Midwinter, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Two areas, totalling 1.95ha, were excavated. The excavation identified archaeological features in both excavation areas, with ridge and furrow predominating across the whole site. Four ditches, possibly forming a north-east/south-west orientated field system, and a pit pre-dating the ridge and furrow were identified. The ridge and furrow is most probably modern in origin, resulting from 19th-century steam ploughing Three ditches correlated with field boundaries depicted on the 1887 First Edition Ordnance Survey map. In addition wells, land drains, pits, as well as numerous animal (pet) burials, relating to the sites former use as an allotment, were also recorded. |
