Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment confirmed that the site lies within the area of Roman Chelmsford, and reconstructed its topography from previous excavations on adjacent sites and small-scale trenching on the site itself in 1985. The assessment identified a Roman road crossing the north of the site, dating from the late 1st to 4th centuries. Potentially Roman buildings may survive, although only external areas are known for certain. The Roman strata is sealed by a medieval and post-medieval cultivated soil. The standing buildings on the site include the pumping house of the original 1854 water works, and a silk mill built in 1858 and converted by Marconi in 1899 into the world's first radio electronics factory. The assessment recommended trial pit recording to confirm deposit survival, and retention of the industrial standing buildings.
