Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken in adavnce of redevelopment on a site next to the site of the Snodland Villa. The earliest phases of activity were early prehistoric pits and a late prehistoric droveway. In the 1st Century AD a Roman field system was laid out and a masonry bath-house built, and possibly as part of a military installation next to the RIver Medway. This bath-house appear to survive, with later addditions, as part of the villa complex, until the mid-late 3rd Century, when the building was demolished and rebuilt with an enlarged footprint. This later aisled building was of unknown function but probably not a bath-house. During this later rebuilding phase, two timber builings were also built and the field system reorganised. The buildings had been demolished by the mid-late 4th century and a inhumation cemetery was located on the site as well as two coin hoards, of 3,600 and 16 coins respectively, which were interred in pits.
