Abstract: |
Archaeological earthwork survey and excavation was undertaken by Northamptonshire Archaeology on land at College Road North, Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, between November 2011 and February 2012. An area of late Iron Age/Romano-British settlement was located on a slight ridge of ground situated adjacent to natural ponds and marshy ground. There seemed to have been a short-lived attempt at cultivation, perhaps a vineyard, in the early Roman period, but this was quickly abandoned. Settlement was subsequently focussed on the slight ridge and comprised multiple enclosures arranged around the ponds. A possible rectangular timber building was constructed in the 1st or 2nd centuries AD. A number of burials and cremations dated to the 1st and 2nd centuries and included three examples of decapitation. |
