Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was conducted by NPS Archaeology on behalf of Anglian Water Services Limited during the excavation of an open and cut trench for a replacement water main at Long Melford, Suffolk. The watching brief involved monitoring a 900m stretch of trenching from Chad Brook and along Bull Lane, Long Melford. All of the trenching was undertaken within existing highways. The route of the trenching possesses considerable potential for intersecting a wide range of archaeological evidence related to prehistoric and historic settlement especially as Long Melford is known as an ancient medieval market town. Two probable ditches were encountered during the monitoring within an area of flood plain deposits alongside an area of higher (habitable) land adjacent to Chad Brook. No archaeological artefacts were recovered. |
