Abstract:
An excavation was carried out along the route of the proposed Papworth Everard bypass. Three areas for investigation had already been examined during the evaluation, with another three areas being identified during the course of the work. At the far south east end of the excavation area a mid Bronze Age cremation cemetery was discovered, sealed by over 1m of alluvium. Excavation revealed 39 cremations, some of which were urned, and a number of associated features. Elsewhere investigations revealed a substantial mid - late Iron Age field boundary system, which appeared to be associated with settlement at an unknown location at the noth east end of the excavation area. A number of seemingly isolated structural features of unknown function were also identified at the south end of the excavation area, including a single huge posthole and a number of beam slotted short linear ditches. The use of the site continued into the early Romano-British period, with some of the earlier Iron Age ditches being maintained, and a few new boundaries being established.
