Abstract:
Following a trial trenching evaluation, the Silt Pond Area (Site C) and Processing Plant Area (Site D (north)) of the Reservoir/Gravel Quarry were excavated. A Late Iron Age enclosure with iron working debris in its ditch formed a working area (Site D (north)) outside the entrance to the main settlement enclosure, rwecorded as a cropmark but not yet excavated. Late Iron Age boundary ditches and pits with large amounts of pottery were also recorded on Site D (north). A Late Iron Age trackway leading to the Site D settlement was recorded in Site C 100m to the east. Medieval and post-medieval field boundaries and enclosures were recorded on both sites. Rectangular cropmarks in the east of the site (Quarry Stage 1D) proved to be post-medieval/modern paddocks. Further stages of excavation and monitoring are planned for later stages of quarrying.
