Abstract:
An archaeological excavation and watching brief was conducted for Norfolk County Council's Directorate of Environment, Planning and Transport during the construction of a new public transport route from Wisbech Road to Boal Quay, King's Lynn. The excavation took place where the route passed through the medieval precinct of the Carmelite Friary (Whitefriars) and two watching brief areas were located where the route crossed the supposed line of the 17th-century town wall. A medieval wall that appeared to have been constructed in two phases was recorded on the same alignment as the upstanding gatehouse to the east. Also present was a large amount of medieval masonry reused in later post-medieval structures, and which included a dressed ashlar fragment possibly dating to the foundation of the friary. The location of a possible medieval watercourse to the north of the Gatehouse, the presence of which had been supposed by the alignment of property boundaries and the report of a buried medieval bridge, may have been indicated by stratigraphic evidence in the northern part of the excavation site. An extensive deposit of silt was present over much of the eastern and southern part of the excavation area, which was dated between the medieval period and the mid 17th century. Its origins and purpose are unclear but there is a possibility that it may be associated with defensive earthworks thrown up for the siege of 1643.The watching brief aspect of this project was centred on the supposed line of the Civil War defensive earthworks, but documentary research has dated these lines to the years immediately after the siege. No evidence of earthworks was found .
