Abstract: |
No 35 Strand is a detached house in Topsham, in an area of 17th-century speculative development south of the quay. The house has many of the characteristics of the so-called 'Dutch houses' of Topsham, but has not previously been classed as one of them. A survey of the property for the new owners in advance of possible alterations to the house allowed a re-assessment of the structure and its fixtures and fittings. The house is of 17th century date but was altered and its aspect changed from south to north in the early 19th century. It is considered that the house has so many similarities with the Dutch houses in plan and structure that it must have formed part of the same development, but that its character has been obscured by subsequent developments. |
