Abstract:
Archaeological investigations at High Street, Gargrave uncovered evidence of previously unknown Late Iron Age/Early Roman activity, represented by six graves which appear to belong to a cemetery. The cemetery appears to have been positioned on a naturally elevated area, providing a promontory in the surrounding lower landscape. The burial practices adopted at this cemetery, in particular for the female skeletons are unusual for the period. Two of the skeletons appear to have been bound prior to internment. In addition, one of these bound skeletons had been positioned directly above that of a flexed female skeleton, a practice that has no known parallels in the Late Iron Age or Early Roman period. The area then appeared to be undisturbed until the medieval period. Two phases of late 11th to early 13th-century medieval activity were identified during the excavations. The first was associated with a group of linear ditches and associated pits forming possible tenement plots. This phase was followed by the construction of post-holes and pits, of unknown function. These archaeological investigations have contributed data that will aid the understanding of the dettlement of Gargrave in the Late Iron Age/Early Roman and medieval periods. In particular, they hasve provided an insight into Late Iron Age/Early Roman mortuary practice, contributing invaluable information to funerary studies of the period.
