Abstract:		 September to October 2006. Oxford Archaeology carried out a series of archaeological work, consisting of a watching brief, fieldwalking and an area of strip, map and recording, along the route of a proposed new gas pipeline between Lockerley and Marchwood, Hampshire. The watching brief (phase 1) was carried out during geo-technical test pitting along the length of the proposed pipeline. A small number of flint flakes were found in the vicinity of Tatchbury Mount Hillfort during this phase. Low levels of 18th - 19th century pottery, clay pipe stems and ceramic building material were recovered from top soil deposits at the southern part of the pipeline route but probably a result of manuring. A fieldwalking exercise (phase 2) then took place along part of the route, totalling 11 fields. This exercise produced a small quantity of worked flint and a quantity of burnt flint hinting later prehistoric activity along the route. Roman pottery was identified in fields to the north and south ends of the route. Post medieval ceramic building material was retrieved from all of the fields and dates to the 18th - 19th century. Substantial quantities of metal working slag was collected from a field near Tatchbury Mount Hillfort but the pottery suggests that the metalworking is of comparatively recent date. Finally a strip map and record exercise (phase 3) took place south-west of Tatchbury Mount Hillfort. This found traces of ridge and furrow were present within the underlying natural subsoil as well as a former ploughsoil sealed by the present ploughsoil. The only feature was a modern pit containing bottles, glass and 20th century pottery. Finds from the topsoil included prehistoric worked flint, a few sherds of 13th/14th century pottery but it was mainly 18th - 20th century material including ceramic building material and pottery.
