Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in August 2009 at the request of RPS Planning and Development on behalf of Taylor Wimpey on land at at Peters Road, Locks Heath, Fareham, Hampshire. Ten trenches were excavated. The majority of the trenches contained no archaeological features or deposits. Trench 11/15 contained three, possibly four, probable cremation burials. These remained unexcavated but were observed as pottery urns set within undefined cuts into the natural substrate. One of the urns was found alongside a smaller accessory vessel. Loose pottery fragments recovered from one of the urns probably date to the Middle Bronze Age. A small charcoalfilled pit was located 45m to the south, within Trench 12. This was undated, although it is possible that it was associated with the probable cremations. |
