Abstract: |
Six archaeological evaluation trenches were opened by machine under supervision on land adjacent to Curzon Avenue, Cleethorpes, North-East Lincolnshire. The trenching demonstrated that a thin topsoil covered a thicker subsoil, with underlying weathered boulder-clay. No artefacts were found in any of the trenches, excluding 20th century debris associated with a pit in Trench 5, and land drainage pipes laid at regular spacings in Trench 1. An isolated undated post-hole in Trench 1 could conceivably pre-date other human activity at the site, but this was not confirmed. A north-south aligned cut boundary feature effectively delineates the eastern limit of slightly higher ground at the western end of the site. This feature was cut through the subsoil and is therefore likely to be of post-medieval or more recent date. It is concluded that the archaeological potential of the site is negligible. |
