Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology carried out an excavation and watching brief to meet a condition of planning consent for redevelopment. The excavation focussed on two islands of archaeology preserved beneath the basement floor of the former National Bank of Greece; one of these islands was located during the evaluation and the other during groundworks. The earliest archaeological deposits in both areas were consistent with Roman quarrying. A large pit had been dug into natural gravel and backfilled with waste material, including cess. Evidence of medieval activity dating from the 13th - 14th centuries was recorded, the earlier of two phases in this period being represented by two refuse pits and a substantial ditch. This was succeded by the development of a thick soil deposit, after which a second phase of medieval activity was represented by further pitting. The latest evidence of archaeological activity before modern construction was represented by a pair of Victorian building foundations constructed with rubble from earlier structures. The watching brief confirmed that the survival of archaeological deposits was restricted to the areas investigated during the evaluation.
