Abstract:
Wessex Arcaheology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to undertake an archaeological evaluation on a proposed development site at Hereson School, Ramsgate Road, Broadstairs, Kent. The site covers an area of land measuring approximately 7ha and is centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) 639236, 166990. The evaluation formed part of a planning condition placed upon the development proposal that proposes the construction of 150 houses following the demolition of the existing school. A total of thirty trial trenches were positioned across the site to assess its archaeological potential prior to the proposed development. Eighteen of these trenches were targetted over geophysical anomalies. The archaeological evaluation has confirmed the presence of a single ditch dated from the Middle to Late Bronze Age within Trench 2, a possible quarry pit within Trench 13, a single undated inhumation within Trench 17 and a tree throw with Mid to Late Bronze Age pottery within Trench 29. From the eighteen trenches targeted over geophysical anomalies, only the ditch in Trench 2 and the possible quarry pit in Trench 13 corresponded to geophysical anomalies of anthropogenic origin. The remaining geophysical anomalies appeared to correspond with either geological features, the contents of the levelling layer or modern services. Trenches 2 to 10 and 12 to 15 revealed evidence of previous landscaping across the southern part of the site in order to create two levelled playing fields. The archaeological evaluation has identified a moderate to high potential for further archaeological remains to be encountered within the vicinity of Trenches 2, 13 and 17.
