Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation in advance of proposed redevelopment of the western part of the former hospital site. Fifteen evaluation trenches were excavated, most of them located between existing buildings; a further four proposed trenches could not be excavated because of site constraints. Part of a large ditch of possible Bronze Age date was recorded in Trench 7; the ditch may be associated with the scheduled Late Bronze Age enclosure (SM 163) which lies south east of and extends into that corner of the site. Two ditches and a pit of Romano-British date, the pit containing a horse skull, were recorded in Trench 6 on the eastern edge of the site. Pottery, including amphora sherds, and grain recovered from these features suggests small-scale settlement in the vicinity. Truncation and modern landscaping was evident and has resulted in the natural degraded chalk being directly below topsoil in some areas, but the chalk was capped by more than 0.50m of Thanet Sand in the higher south-eastern corner of the site, near the Late Bronze Age enclosure |
