Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Persimmon Homes (South Coast) Ltd to carry out an archaeological evaluation on land at Larcombe Road, Petersfield, Hampshire, NGR 474000 122400.The work was commissioned before the submission of a planning application to construct 70 new housing units on the Site. The Site consists of a 3.2 ha parcel of land, which is currently undeveloped pasture. A number of small water courses run through and around the Site. The area around the site had been the subject of a desk based assessment in March 2010 resulting in an evaluation, comprising of thirty one 30m by 1.8m trial trenches. The evaluation was carried out between the 17th and the 31st of January and identified two post medieval ditches, a post medieval water management wall and series of modern land drains. The post-medieval ditch was found to contain three small animal bone fragments and a residual Romano-British pottery sherd. The results of the evaluation correlated well with the desk based assessment, verifying that the earliest evidence for activity within the site dates to the post-medieval period.
