Abstract: |
Archaeological desk-based assessment and geophysical survey undertaken in advance of proposed residential development. The site lies in an area of archaeological potential on the edge of the medieval village of Stainton. Remnants of medieval strip fields may have formed part of the site. The geomagnetic surveys detected a number of modern features including land drains and manhole covers, electricity poles and extant remains of dry stone walls. An area of ridge and furrow cultivation was detected to the south side of the site. The distance between the furrows was c.5m which could potentially indicate it dates to the medieval period |
