Abstract:
The archaeological work comprised the machine excavation of 26 trenches. The earliest activity recorded on site was a ditch of Middle Saxon date located in the south-west of the site. The south-west remained the main focus for activity during the medieval period with a series of probable enclosures as well as a building platform located in this area. All of these features were of 12th or early 13th century date and are almost certainly related to the former hamlet and church of Felchurch thought to have stood in this area. While no direct evidence of the church was recorded, the building platform was large and it is possible that the church stood in that location; a fragment of human bone within one of the enclosure ditches also hints at possible burials with the immediate area. Further medieval activity was recorded to the east, close to the line of Poplar Lane, suggesting that this route may have been established during the medieval period. This activity comprised two pits. Activity on site appears to cease during the 13th or 14th centuries with no features or finds of later medieval date recorded on the site. By the later post-medieval period activity on site was agricultural and has remained so into the modern period. A series of field boundary ditches of probable 18th and 19th century date were recorded across the site, these ditches correlate reasonably well with the 1838 Sproughton Tithe Map of the area. A number of pits were located close to the field boundaries in the corners of fields.
