Abstract:
A series of seven cores was taken under geaoarchaeological supervision on the foreshore at the Fishbourne Ferry Terminal to understand the survival, character, and potential significance of the Quaternary deposit sequence that will be impacted by the proposed ferry terminal improvement work. The results confirmed that the area has largely been stripped of Holocene deposits by tidal action, exacerbated by wash created by marine traffic, leaving just beach deposits overlying the Oligocene Bedrock clay. This has removed the capping of peat which marks the end of a 'relative' drying phase/retrogression during the late Neolithic and Bronze Age prior to the later prehistoric final large incursion. Palaeo-environmental assessment of the Pollen, Diatoms and Foraminiferal/Ostracod in samples from Borehole 4 indicate a local estuarine environment which is clearly an intertidal mud, comparable with other coastal situations on the Isle of Wight. The palaeo-environmental evidence indicates probably prehistoric brackish and marine environments with fen carr in the immediate hinterland, and freshwater flowing from this, or other streams locally, into the sampled location, of probable Neolithic date.
