Abstract: |
Between 10th and 19th August 2015 Oxford Archaeology East carried out the second phase of an archaeological evaluation on land south of Worlington Road, Mildenhall. The first stage of the evaluation excavated seven 30m trenches in February 2014 (Moan 2014), targeting anomalies seen on the geophysical survey (Prestidge 2013). In the second stage, a further 16 trenches were added. Trenches were positioned to target the continuation of potential features identified in the first stage, and to further evaluate the archaeological potential of the development area by investigating blank areas between the earlier trenches. A number of archaeological features were identified, including a series of Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age pits across Trenches 12, 16 and 17, and two Middle Iron Age ditches in Trench 20. Prehistoric finds were also recovered from a series of natural hollows across the site. Features yielded a number of pieces of worked flint including a Mesolithic bladelet and a Late Neolithic sub-circular, invasively retouched knife. Prehistoric pottery dating from the Late Neolithic to the Middle Iron Age was also recovered, including sherds of Grooved Ware, Beaker and Collared Urn. |
