Abstract:
Magnetometry was carried out by Archaeological Surveys Ltd at Kingshill Recycling Centre to the south east of Cricklade in Wiltshire. The survey was requested by Cotswold Archaeology after archaeological evaluation excavation revealed Roman features and artefacts belonging to both the Roman period and Iron Age. The results of the magnetometry demonstrate the presence of anomalies of archaeological potential across all of the 1.2ha surveyed. The anomalies are mainly positive linear and discrete in nature indicating the presence of ditch-like and pit-like features respectively. Positive areas may indicate accumulations of magnetically enhanced soil of archaeological potential. The features appear to represent a series of conjoined enclosures and trackways. The moderately high levels of enhancement would tend to suggest that they lie within the immediate vicinity of settlement and/or industrial activity. Ring ditch-like anomalies in the north western part of the survey area may indicate settlement from the late prehistoric or early Roman periods. The complex and often incoherent layout of anomalies suggests a long period of settlement and activity with realignment of land boundaries and a shift in the focus of settlement.
