Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by WSP Environmental and Energy to undertake an archaeological evaluation in advance of development of land at St Stephen's Place, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, BA14 8AH. A total of 19 trenches were machine excavated with the work comprising a 5% sample of the development area. The proposed development; the site of a former Tesco's supermarket (now demolished) and associated car park occupy an area of approximately 1.25 hectares. The Site is located to the south of an Anglo-Saxon settlement, Saxo-Norman church and cemetery and Trowbridge Castle; an early medieval motte and bailey structure. The evaluation established that the Anglo-Saxon and early medieval activity which was concentrated on the drier cornbrash natural geology did not extend south into the Site on to the wetter alluvial deposits associated with the River Biss. A number of wall remnants, culverts and structures associated with the former mill buildings on the Site were identified however these had for the most part been heavily impacted upon by the construction and subsequent demolition of the supermarket. Although an area of the Site was not available for trenching due to the location of a spoil heap, it is not considered likely that there will be any archaeological potential within that area. Indeed it is not considered likely that any further archaeological mitigation will be required.
