Abstract:
The study area crossed a large part of the Furness Peninsular, with evidence for activity dating as far back as the Mesolithic period. Although evidence for later activity became less clear, there was thought to be settlement in the area continually from the prehistoric period onwards. A total of 58 sites of archaeological interest were identified, the vast majority relating to the iron industry but also activities such as quarrying and lime burning were evident. In total 17 pieces of additional mitigation work were recommended. [Au(abr)]
