Abstract: |
Forty-five trial trenches were excavated prior to the proposed creation of an agricultural reservoir, following the removal of the underlying mineral deposits. The evaluation revealed archaeological features across parts of the site, dating from the Middle and Late Iron Age, and a larger number of Romano-British features, probably associated with a farmstead settlement on the gravel terrace of the river Thames. The south-western corner of the site revealed few archaeological features, suggesting that this area was the hinterland of the settlement, where one would have expected the field systems to have been.
