Abstract:
The area affected by trenching and associated groundworks for the gas pipeline replacement covers the route of the pipeline along Sidford High Street (the A3052) through Sidford, extending north along School street up to where it meets Two Bridges Road. Insertion pits associated with the mainline replacement works were also observed around Sid Vale Close in the north of the village, and along Drakes Avenue, Fleming Avenue and Lockyer Avenue to the south of the Sidford Road (the A375) in the village (see attached plans Figs. 1-4). A total of two hundred and thirty one separate interventions were monitored, which generally consisted of insertion pits measuring approximately 1m in length by 1.5m in width by 1m in depth, combined with several larger insertion pits or trenches measuring up to 9m in length by 4m in width and 1.6m in depth. The natural substrate was not observed in any of the interventions along Sidford High Street. In addition to the original gas main pipe and its connections, other modern service pipes were exposed within a number of the insertion pits. No earlier archaeological deposits or artefacts were exposed or recovered from these excavations.
