Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out by Wessex Archaeology during the excavation of trenches for poured concrete foundations at the site of the former Cockneys public house. Remains dating to the Romano-British, medieval and post-medieval periods had been recorded during an evaluation of the site. A series of shallow pits similar to those found during the evaluation was recorded. The pits were undated but are thought to be the result of gravel extraction associated with the construction or repair of Roman Watling Street, the line of which is known to be followed by the present Old Kent Road. There was no evidence for medieval activity, nor of truncation, the Roman levels being overlain by deposits indicative of the site being open for a long period of time before dumping and levelling associated with the construction of The Cockneys took place. |
