Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology at the site of the former Cockneys public house in advance of redevelopment. The basement area of the public house, Trench A, was investigated (after the removal of the floor slab) and Trenches B and C were opened in the area behind it. The earliest features recorded were a number of pits and/or post holes from which finds of Romano-British date were recovered. Some of thes features were sealed by a trample horizon which was, in its turn, cut by more pits of similar date. Two ditches also tthought to date to the Romano-British period were recorded in Trench C, and a possible medieval ditch, recut in the post-medieval period, was recorded in Trench A. Levelling material was brought on to the site before buildings were constructed in the late 19th century. Remants of the buildings were noted in the basement area of The Cockneys and to the south. |
