Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation on land scheduled for development, focusing on the southern part of the site, an area at the base of slopes from higher ground to the north and west. Geophysical survey had shown the higher ground to the north to be densely occupied by archaeological features but few had been recorded in the southern area. Eight test pits were excavated, all of which showed a consistent sequence of colluvium overlying alluvial clays containing residual prehistoric flint and pottery. No archaeological features were recorded beneath the alluvium. An extant earthwork in the southern part of the site was investigated, a shallow ditch and bank that may correspond with a boundary shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1875. |
