Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation in advance of proposed residential development. Six trenches were excavated, two of which (Trenches 3 and 4) contained evidence of tannery-associated structures, provisionally interpreted as fellmongers' pits. No datable material was recovered from the pits but they are likely to be post-medieval in date: tanning and fellmongering are known to have taken place in the area in both medieval and post-medieval times. The footings of a recently demolished outbuilding were exposed in Trench 3 and the north-east corner of the floor of a barn was recorded in Trench 6. Evidence of a substantial disused drainage ditch was found in Trenches 2 and 6. An organic, peaty layer containing waterlogged woody material, potentially dating from the Bronze Age or Iron Age, was recorded in Trenches 2 and 5. |
