Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation in advance of development. The site lies on the west-facing slope of Shooters Hill, adjacent to Shooters Hill Road which follows the line of a major Roman road (Watling Street). Two trenches were excavated to depths of between 0.7m and 1.2m below current ground level. A Post Medieval pit, from which pottery of 16th-17th century date, ceramic building material, oyster shell and animal bone were recovered, and a large modern pit or soakaway were recorded in Trench 2. No archaeological features were encountered in Trench 1. |
