Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology during piling and construction groundworks. The site lies to the south of the projected course of the Neckinger River, a former tributary of the Thames, and is located on the north-west edge of a relict gravel island (Bermondsey Eyot). Excavations on sites nearby have demonstrated the presence of features and artefacts ranging in date from prehistoric to post-medieval. Evaluation of this site recorded the presence of Romano-British ditches and pits, dating to the 1st or early 2nd century AD. No evidence for earlier activity was recorded, but features of medieval and post-medieval date were revealed. The watching brief found no evidence for archaeology pre-dating the medieval period. Evidence dating to the late 10th to early 11the century was found in situ within a layer or possible pit. Pits and layers dating to the medieval and post-medieval periods were evident, and residual finds were recovered from features of later date. Evidence for industrial/modern activity was also recorded during the watching brief. |
