Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation to meet a condition of planning permission for the construction of three residential properties and associated car parking on land to the rear of 4-10 Cherry Orchard Close. The areas to the south and north of the site are known to contain archaeological remains of prehistoric and Roman date and the site is not far south of the historic centre of St Mary Cray. An earlier evaluation by Wessex Archaeology of land adjacent to the northern edge of the current site produced no evidence of archaeological remains, however. A single feature was recorded, a north-south aligned post-medieval field boundary ditch, from which brick and tile fragments were recovered. The ditch crossed the eastern ends of both evaluation trenches. |
