Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation in advance of the re-use of the existing tarmac surface in connection with the Porsche Driving Experience track at the rear of Becketts Grandstand, Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit. The site is near the site of the medieval chapel of St Thomas a Beckett which was founded in the 13th century. The chapel was converted into two dwellings after the Dissolution, partially rebuilt during the 17th century and finally demolished in 1943 to make way for Silverstone airfield. A gravestone discovered in 1732 is the only indication of an associated cemetery. The chapel lay within the now deserted hamlet of Chapel Green and the Buckinghamshire County GIS indicates that it was centred at NGR 468175 241902. Four evaluation trenches were excavated. Features 4m wide were recorded in the three trenches nearest to the suggested position of the former chapel. Fills at the northern edge of the features contained building rubble, including glazed ridge tiles, plain floor tiles and limestone fragments, suggesting that the site of the chapel had been accurately identified. The features had filled up by the 18th century and topsoil then formed over them. No graves were exposed and no remains associated with Chapel Green were found.
