Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Laing O'Rourke Construction South Ltd to undertake a programme of archaeological work comprising excavation and watching brief in advance of the construction of a Rainwater Attenuation Scheme within the Oxford University Parks. The Oxford University Parks is located on the west bank of the River Cherwell in a rich archaeological landscape, as identified from a series of aerial photographs which reveal remains potentially dating from the Neolithic onwards. Analysis of the photographs has identified an extensive ritual landscape comprising a possible Neolithic cursus and a series of Bronze Age barrows, superseded by a Middle/Late Iron Age to Romano-British settlement, comprising ditched enclosures. Recent excavation in the vicinity of the University Parks has identified a possible henge to the south-west and two Bronze Age barrows and a Romano-British settlement to the south of the Site.
