Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in May 2014 at Land at Michelmersh Wood, Michelmersh, Hampshire. Two trenches were excavated. A Late Iron Age/Early Roman enclosure was identified during the geophysical survey and confirmed during the trial trench evaluation within Trench 1. Five internal features were also identified during the evaluation, three pits and two postholes. Minimal excavation was undertaken due to the large quantity of artefacts recovered. An east/west linear anomaly identified by geophysical survey and located to the south of Trench 2 was not identified during the evaluation. An amorphous anomaly identified by geophysical survey to the north of Trench 2 was identified during the evaluation as a charcoal rich deposit within the topsoil matrix and determined to be of modern origin, possibly a result of extensive localised burning associated with recent tree clearance. It is likely that amorphous anomalies identified during the geophysical survey across the Site may be associated with further modern tree clearance. |
