Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment and an archaeological evaluation were carried out in advance of the construction of a dwelling house and garage at Hadrian Stud, Kirkandrews-on-Eden, near Carlisle. The desk-based assessment indicated that the proposed development area lay adjacent to the vallum associated with Hadrian's Wall, with the extreme northern end of the site lying just inside the scheduled area, but that most of the identifiable activity within the area itself related to post-improvement agricultural practices. The village of Kirkandrews itself contains the site of a medieval church, but the majority of the sites identified by the DBA outwith the development area relate to post-medieval development. The excavation of the evaluation trench led to the identification of five linear features and a single ceramic field drain. Four of the five linear features were on the same alignment as a field boundary depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map and may be related to this feature. A single sherd of 19th/20th century pottery was recovered from the fill of one of the linear features. |
