Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was carried out for the site of the former St Hilda's School in Southwick, a settlement dating to the early medieval period. The site is located on the edge of the medieval settlement core and had a low to moderate potential to contain medieval and post-med features relating to settlement and agriculture. A review of geotechnical test pits and boreholes concluded that the majority of the site had been subject to significant disturbance which reduced the archaeological potential. The former school buildings served the local community and were considered to have local heritage value. A Level 2 survey of the buildings was undertaken prior to demolition.
