Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief by Northern Archaeological Associates during March and April 2012 was maintained during ground investigation works associated with the Flood Alleviation Scheme at Morpeth, Northumberland. The excavation of test pits and boreholes was monitored at four sites on the banks of the Wansbeck. No archaeological features or deposits were observed. This negative result may have been due in part to the limited nature of the groundworks. The boreholes and test pits were generally very narrow, making it difficult to observe in situ stratigraphy. Ground levels at three of the sites had also been raised, both by artificial means and through flooding. As such, any archaeological remains present at these sites are likely to be 1.3m to 2.4m below the present ground level. |
