Abstract: |
In December 2014 Britannia Archaeology Ltd (BA) undertook an archaeological trial trench evaluation on land at Playters New Farm, Church Road, Ellough (NGR: TM 439 883) to comply with an archaeological condition placed on planning application DC/14/1169/FUL for the construction of a solar farm. The works comprised the excavation of 55 trial trenches measuring 30.00 x 1.80m. Background research for the project indicated that the site had a predominant potential for medieval archaeology; it was also topographically favourable for prehistoric activity. The evaluation revealed a single discrete Iron Age/Anglo-Saxon pit containing sherds of a bowl that may have been used as a crucible. Post-medieval to modern agricultural activity was also present on site with evidence of potential small-scale quarry pitting from the same period. |
