Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in March 2015 on land adjacent to Pottery Road, Kingsteignton, Devon. The site lies in the western part of the Newton Abbot Pottery site which dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. The work was therefore required by Teignbridge District Council, as advised by the Devon County Historic Environment Team. An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the start of groundworks. Three trenches, measuring 20m in total and 1.6m wide, were excavated to formation level (0.45m below current ground level). Evidence from the evaluation would suggest that the ground was made up with demolition material from the buildings first shown on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map of 1905. No structural elements of these or of any earlier occupation were found. The lack of pottery from the site, despite examination of spoil heaps, was surprising considering the close proximity to the Newton Abbot Potteries. |
