Abstract:
This project includes the archaeological excavation of four areas within a Romano-British settlement. It was conducted by Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Archaeology Group (SWAAG) with the support of Archaeological Services Durham University (ASDU). The works have demonstrated that a significant archaeological resource is present on the site including secure, stratified and datable deposits. They show that the site comprises a later Roman-British settlement which was not abandoned until the late 4th century. Several distinct areas of stone paving were found one of which contained the remains of a circular structure 7 metres in diameter with an entrance demarcated by an unusual stone sill. A similar sill was identified in a second area of paving. An assemblage of plant macrofossils and charcoal is indicative of the domestic use of the site in the Romano-British period. Artefacts recovered included a medieval arrowhead and 152 sherds of Romano-British period pottery, Other Roman artefacts included glass bangle, bottle and bead fragments, part of a jet ring, part of a shale bangle, iron tools, a copper alloy ingot fragment and decorated strip and an unusual late Roman quernstone.
