Abstract:
New Inn Farm, Stowe, Buckinghamshire is a compact, early 18th-century brick- and timber-built farm and former lodging house, built for Lord Cobham. It originally served visitors to Stowe Gardens (not the house) and seems to have always been a hidden part of the classical landscape ensemble, being of English vernacular style and materials with no real allusion to the Classical antiquity the wider gardens celebrated. Although not part of the Stowe estate since c1930, the farm was purchased by the National Trust in 2005 with a view to restoring it to the public attention. At the time of purchase it was in a state of near- dereliction and parts were in an advanced state of decay or total ruin; only the main house and dairy were fully roofed. The farm forms a compact rectangular group around a central courtyard (serving both the lodging house and farm) with an ancillary courtyard adjacent (serving just the farm). Recording through 2005 and 2006 has been undertaken to inform the compilation of a Conservation Plan for the property and to safeguard aspects of its structure which may not survive stabilisation or conservation works without major alteration or intrusive consolidation.
