Abstract: |
An archaeological investigation was undertaken during groundworks at Oakham School as remains relating to the prehistoric, Romano-British and medieval periods have previously been discovered throughout Oakham and its surrounding environs. The watching brief monitored the removal of footings and ground reduction of an area previously occupied by a building. The investigation revealed a sequence of post-medieval, Victorian and Modern deposits. These included a medieval boundary ditch, which was re-cut during the post-medieval period, medieval and later pits and dumped deposits. Finds retrieved included pottery of Roman to post-medieval date, animal bone, mortar, clay pipe and glass. |
