Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in January 2014 at the Halifax Works, St Mary's Lane, Tewkesbury. Three trenches were excavated. A Medieval ditch or pit was recorded at the southern end of the site from which pottery dating from the 11th to 14th century was recovered along with animal bone which suggests that tanning was being undertaken at the site during this period.. Two brick wells or pits and three rectangular wooden tanning pits were also observed. These were dated to the 18th to 19th century and relate to the known location and use of the site as a tannery as indicated on the 1st edition OS map of 1885 |
