Abstract: |
Allen Archaeology Limited have undertaken an archaeological evaluation and topographic survey at The Mound, Canons Ashby, Northamptonshire on behalf of the National Trust. The mound lies within the park at Canons Ashby House but whilst it is a prominent feature its origins and function are not well understood. The works were undertaken to establish the nature of any damage to archaeological deposits from trees planted on the mound and also to provide any additional information regarding the function and origin of the mound. The evaluation showed that there is some limited damage to the mound from the roots of trees present on it. The damage was revealed to the mound material itself and to later landscaping layers. Evidence from the evaluation also indicates that a building with a tiled roof stood on the mound in the later medieval and/or post-medieval periods, the evidence for which is buried beneath later landscaping deposits probably associated with management of the mound within its park setting in the later post-medieval period |
