Abstract:
An archaeological walkover survey was undertaken within Lady Canning's Plantation, on a 60m wide corridor along the route of a proposed mountain bike track. The survey identified a number of archaeological features in the eastern half of the survey area, comprising hollow ways associated with post-medieval packhorse routes and circular or oval hollows associated with coal and stone extraction. These features are likely to date to the post-medieval period, with mining recorded in the area in the 19th century. All the features are in an average to good condition, with the main threats identified being the potential for damage by tree root activity. No archaeological features were identified in the western half of the survey area, where the tree cover is more dense. Of the features identified, the main impact from the proposed mountain bike track is likely to be on the hollow ways which are crossed by the eastern end of the route. Two small quarry pits, a mine shaft hollow and a possible trackway are located within 5-10m of to the proposed track. The remaining features identified are over 15m from the proposed mountain bike track.
