Abstract: |
In June 2010, Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of c2 hectares of agricultural pasture land at Bayard dairy, Upwey, Dorset (NGR SY666853) prior to determination of planning consent for a proposed new dairy complex. The site lies on the southern flank of the South Dorset Ridgeway, immediately adjacent to two Bronze Age round barrows (Scheduled Monument DO 244). Eleven 30m long trial trenches were excavated, amounting to a c2.5% sample of the proposed development area. No archaeological features were found, but all eleven trenches produced assemblages of flint-and chert working debris, including tools, and ranging in date from early Neolithic to Late Bronze Age. Small amounts of post-medieval pottery came from ploughsoil and a possible tree-throw was investigated. |
