Abstract:
The excavation revealed an extensive Romano-British rural landscape comprising a dense concentration of features dated between the 1st and late 4th century+ AD, as well as more ephemeral evidence of prehistoric and medieval/ post-medieval activity. The Roman occupation, represented by seven distinct sub-phases, was chiefly characterised by a substantial and evolving system(s) of boundaries and enclosures, including a 'ladder' system dated to the mid-3rd to early 4th century. The recovered artefactual/ ecofactual assemblage is equally rich. The site forms a major element of a large Romano-British agricultural/ settlement landscape which also includes previously excavated sites in the vicinity.
